Action and Interaction; Getting Started

(( I decided I would go ahead and do what Mr. Du did and make an opening post about the class I plan on teaching and just give you an overview on my methods and what I expect. Nothing too scary, I promise. In fact, I hope many people will just have to read this and realize that they don't need me.. because there really isn't anything more simple than this. ))

Action and Interaction.. an Introduction:

I think the foundation of RPing lies in these two terms. Though most people stopped calling it a "RPG" and started calling thing like this just "RPing" in a sense, they are one in the same still to this day in my mind. Every role-play can be almost translated in the idea of a classic turn-based RPG game very simply. It's your turn, you have a few options. You can, "Speak".. you can "Move" or "Interact" (meaning interacting with your environment in some way)... all the subsets of the things you can do in a post are all derived from these three basic building blocks. You can run away from the other person that just walked up by "Moving" but that's your turn.

What does set RPing apart is at this point, I want you to really immerse yourself in it. If you were in real life, and suddenly you started running.. sure, there is a good chance the person you just ran from is only going to stare at you and wonder what they did to make you do that.. but there are always situations that who you just ran from might not be so happy to let you go. If they were after your life, they aren't just going to settle with letting you walk away.. they'll use their turn to run after you, being given the same choices on what to do. Everything has to make sense in the more blending way you can possibly make it. When your role playing, your moving a character in a fully real, 3-D universe. People just don't disappear off the map. You can't just suddenly pretend that you didn't just get slashed. While we as RPer's have to deal with the fact that people will suddenly just vanish or all threads won't have enabled death.. we should always strive to pain the most perfect and real picture of this world that we can.

When your writing your post, when your doing your actions.. you want to do more than just simply post the bare facts of what your doing. You post that you said this, and did this.. but remember that your setting up the next person for their turn. If you want your thread to live, if you want to get in a groove where people are posting one after another and there is real excitement for what the other person will do, then you need to paint the most complete picture for someone. Describe your "Actions" in the best way to "Interact" with you, so it's so much easier for them to do the same so it can be your turn to interact with them. A simple, turn based game of life.

In my class, there will be many very simple exercises.. all which I believe are perfect for learning how to better act and interact in all of your threads. I really do think that every person that comes in and out of my class has the potential to be the "best RP'er ever.. because every mind is full of creative juices untapped that are unlike what anyone else has seen.

I hope to help all students in need of some nice, fun, low-stress practice.
